With a palette of camel, gray, black and a deep deep gold, Derek Lam showed his fall collection. His inspiration coming from Louis Malle's 1958 film Ascenseur pour l'échafaud, the collection was full of superluxe furs and everything you'd expect. "It's all about luxury while at the same time feeling casual and relaxed," said Derek.
The models walked on soft beige carpeting, à la YSL interiors, with smoked out eyes and red liner in front of everyone from Vogue.
More cozy than previous collections, it contained lots of lavish furs. Still made from real fur, (sorry peta), but it's coyote to keep the cost down. Not completely new were his figure fitting dresses topped with oversized tuxedo jackets.
I love all the new designers and their aesthetic, but where are the evening gowns? Is it simply that young girls don't necessarily wear evening gowns or are they scared?
On the other hand, Derek Lam is famous for sportswear.
Is there such a thing as playing it too safe ?

i do think there is such a thing as too safe. For all the people that watch Project Runway every year like i do, the judges are always telling the designers that their designs are "too safe". i agree half the time because fashion is all about being youself. You absolutely can not hold back ever. you always need to put 100% of yourself into your work. YOu can usually tell when a designer is not being themselves with their work. that's when i think they're being too safe. designers need to let the world know who they are through their fashion. that's what it's all about.
ReplyDeleteI think there is, and the same time there's not. I think people choose a style that is "safe" as a starting thing, in case it doesn't work out it wont cause a huge problem. On the other hand, there's not such thing as playing it too safe because any time a new fashion comes out it all depends on the people if it is good or bad, whether it is a hit or not. Any thing you do is risky.
ReplyDeleteI think so, I mean look at some designers like Guillermo Mariotto's Obama gown, or Badgley Mischka's designs lately. Feathers much?
ReplyDeleteThey are going all out and having fun doing so. When you are a designer nobody want's you to play it safe, you have to go to the extream and make it or break it.
I guess it just depends on your style. "Too safe" for someone might be just perfect for someone else. I guess just do what you want because it's all up to you in the first place.
